Marchenko to the Leafs!

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets have pulled off a surprising trade, with both teams making some serious changes to their rosters.

Toronto is sending Matthew Knies, Ryan Lorentz, Christian Andrae and a second-round pick to Columbus in exchange for Kirill Marchenko, Miles Wood and goaltender Elvis Merzlikins, with Columbus retaining some salary.

For the Leafs, Marchenko is the obvious prize. The 25-year-old winger gives Toronto another big, skilled forward who could potentially play a major role alongside its top players. Merzlikins also gives the Leafs another option in goal, while Wood adds some size and physicality.

Columbus, meanwhile, gets a young player in Knies who is already established in the NHL and still has plenty of upside, along with Andrae and a second-round pick.

It’s a big swing from both teams, but there’s no question Toronto is betting heavily on Marchenko becoming a major part of its future.
