The NHL season is officially here, and somehow Evander Kane is still sitting on the sidelines.
The 35-year-old winger remains one of the biggest names available after his four-year, $20.5 million contract expired with Vancouver. Kane has 648 points in 1,001 NHL games and has played a major role in deep playoff runs throughout his career.
So where could he end up?
The Edmonton Oilers are an obvious possibility. Kane knows the organization, has played in back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals with Edmonton, and could provide some much-needed size, physicality and playoff experience if the two sides can find a number that works.
The Colorado Avalanche could also make sense if they want another experienced top-nine winger.
Colorado remains one of the league’s top contenders, and Kane’s ability to play a heavy playoff game could be attractive.
The Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars are other teams that could potentially make sense if they want to add another experienced forward later in the season.
At this point, Kane may have to wait for the right opportunity rather than simply taking the first contract offered.
But with the season now underway, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before someone comes calling.
