The idea of Quinn Hughes joining his brothers in New Jersey refuses to go away.
Hughes is entering the final season of his contract with the Minnesota Wild, and despite the team making it clear that they want to keep their star defenseman long term, there has been no extension signed yet. Hughes has said he isn’t rushing the decision, leaving plenty of room for speculation about what could happen next.
And there is one obvious destination that keeps coming up: New Jersey.
Quinn’s younger brothers, Jack and Luke Hughes, are already members of the Devils. The three brothers have talked openly about wanting to play together in the NHL, making New Jersey an obvious storyline whenever Quinn’s future is discussed.
Jack Hughes recently acknowledged that playing with Quinn would be special, but also made it clear that he wants his brother to make the decision that is best for his own career. That doesn’t mean a reunion is coming, but it certainly keeps the possibility alive.
The contract situation could also play a major role. NHL.com reported that there has been speculation Quinn could prefer a shorter-term deal, potentially allowing his contract timeline to line up more closely with Jack’s future in New Jersey. Quinn himself has not publicly confirmed that this is his plan.
For Minnesota, losing Hughes would be a massive blow. He had 53 points in just 48 regular-season games after joining the Wild last season and added 15 points in 11 playoff games. The Wild have repeatedly expressed their desire to keep him, with general manager Bill Guerin saying he remains confident the two sides can reach an agreement.
Still, if an extension cannot be reached, the Hughes-to-New Jersey speculation is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
Imagine a Devils blue line featuring Luke Hughes alongside Quinn, with Jack Hughes leading the offense. It would be one of the most talked-about family reunions in NHL history.
For now, though, it’s still just a possibility. Quinn Hughes remains a member of the Minnesota Wild, and the next major development could come from his contract negotiations.
