Oilers Make History on the Penalty Kill

The Edmonton Oilers came out flying tonight against the Vancouver Canucks, and they weren’t just scoring at even strength.

Edmonton scored two shorthanded goals, giving the penalty kill a huge impact in what quickly turned into a one-sided game. The Oilers entered the night coming off a wild 6-5 overtime loss to Vancouver, so they clearly weren’t interested in letting the Canucks control the rematch.

Scoring once while down a man is impressive enough. Doing it twice in the same game is something the Oilers have accomplished only a handful of times in franchise history.

In fact, tonight marks just the seventh time in Oilers franchise history that Edmonton has scored two shorthanded goals in the same game.

The Oilers have already shown plenty of offensive firepower early this season, but getting production from the penalty kill makes this performance even more impressive.

After giving up six goals in the season opener, Edmonton responded with an offensive explosion in Vancouver. The rematch couldn’t have gone much differently.

And with the Oilers pouring goals onto the board, their penalty kill made sure it got in on the fun too.
