Evan Bouchard is off to a ridiculous start with the Edmonton Oilers. Through the first four games of the season, Bouchard has recorded at least 10 points and a plus-10 rating, becoming the first defenceman in NHL history to accomplish both feats over the opening four games of a season.
Think about that for a second. Defencemen are expected to move the puck, shut down opposing forwards and help their team get out of trouble. Bouchard is doing all of that while producing offensively at a level the league has never seen from a defenceman to start a season.
For the Oilers, this is exactly the kind of production that can make them dangerous. Everyone knows what Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl can do when they get rolling, but having a defenceman who can control the game from the blue line gives Edmonton another major threat for opposing teams to worry about.
Bouchard’s biggest strength has always been his ability to create offence. His passing, vision and heavy shot make him a natural fit on the power play, where he can find passing lanes and punish teams that give him too much room. When he is confident with the puck, the Oilers can attack from almost anywhere in the offensive zone.
The plus-10 rating is also worth paying attention to. While plus-minus isn’t a perfect way to judge a player’s defensive game, it shows just how successful Edmonton has been with Bouchard on the ice during this opening stretch. He’s not just piling up points; the results have been going the Oilers’ way, too.
Of course, four games don’t make a season, and keeping up this pace will be nearly impossible. Opposing teams will adjust, scoring will eventually slow down, and Edmonton will face tougher stretches throughout the year. But a start like this is still a reminder of how much of an impact Bouchard can have when everything clicks.
The bigger question is whether Bouchard can carry this momentum into the playoffs. Edmonton has been searching for the right combination to get over the final hurdle and win the Stanley Cup. If Bouchard can continue to drive offence while giving the Oilers reliable minutes on defence, he could be one of the most important players on the roster.
For now, Oilers fans have every reason to be excited. Evan Bouchard is putting together a historic opening stretch, and Edmonton’s blue line is giving the team another reason to believe this could be a special season.
What do you think, Oilers fans? Is Evan Bouchard the best offensive defenceman in the NHL right now?
