NHL Trade Idea: Edmonton Oilers Land Alexis Lafrenière in Blockbuster Deal With New York Rangers

What if the Edmonton Oilers made a major move to add another top-six forward alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl? This Hockey Vice trade proposal would send Alexis Lafrenière to Edmonton, with the New York Rangers receiving goaltender Tristan Jarry, forward Isaac Howard, defenceman Shakir Mukhamadullin, a 2027 second-round pick and a 2028 first-round pick.

It would be a massive deal for both sides, with Edmonton looking to strengthen its Stanley Cup chances and New York receiving a package that offers a mix of immediate NHL talent, young players and valuable draft capital.

Why the Edmonton Oilers Would Make This Trade

Lafrenière would give the Oilers another talented winger who could contribute offensively while taking some pressure off McDavid and Draisaitl. The former first-overall pick has shown that he can produce at the NHL level, and at just 24 years old, there is still room for him to take another step forward.

The Rangers forward has already demonstrated his scoring ability early in the 2026-27 season, recording a hat trick against the New York Islanders on October 7. Adding a player with that kind of offensive potential could make an already dangerous Edmonton attack even tougher to defend.

Edmonton’s biggest motivation would be improving its chances of winning the Stanley Cup. The Oilers have the star power to compete with anyone, but adding another skilled forward could give them more options when the playoffs arrive. Lafrenière could slot into the top six and give the coaching staff another option on the wing.

Why the New York Rangers Would Consider It

The Rangers would be giving up a young forward with significant upside, so the return would have to be substantial. In this proposal, they would receive Jarry to help address their goaltending situation, Howard as a promising young forward, and Mukhamadullin as a defenceman who could contribute now and in the future.

The two draft picks might be the most important part of the package in the long run. A 2027 second-round pick and a 2028 first-round pick would give New York additional flexibility to continue reshaping its roster, whether that means drafting young talent or using those assets in another trade.

Of course, moving Lafrenière would not be an easy decision. He remains a key part of the Rangers’ plans, and his recent offensive production makes the idea of trading him even more complicated. New York would need to be convinced that the depth and future assets coming back would outweigh the loss of a young, skilled forward.

Who Wins This NHL Trade?

For Edmonton, this would be an aggressive win-now move. The Oilers would be betting that Lafrenière can become a major contributor in a lineup built around two of the league’s best offensive players. However, giving up Jarry, Howard, Mukhamadullin and two draft picks would be a significant price, particularly with the importance of goaltending depth and future roster flexibility.

For New York, the appeal would be the quantity and variety of the return. The Rangers would acquire a goaltender, a young forward, a defenceman and two picks, giving them multiple ways to improve their roster. The risk is that Lafrenière develops into an even more productive player elsewhere, leaving the Rangers without the offensive talent they traded away.

My verdict: Edmonton would be making the bigger immediate push to win, while New York would be betting on depth and future flexibility. It’s the kind of blockbuster that would get Oilers and Rangers fans talking, but the Rangers would need to be very comfortable with the return before moving a player like Lafrenière.
