The Edmonton Oilers have never had trouble putting pucks in the net. With Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl leading the attack, scoring goals is rarely the biggest concern. Keeping them out, however, has been a different conversation. That’s why Devon Levi’s recent performances are getting attention. The young goaltender is winning games, making important saves, and giving Edmonton something every Stanley Cup contender needs: confidence between the pipes.
Three Straight Wins Are Turning Heads
Levi’s last three starts have produced a perfect 3-0 record, and his performances have been particularly encouraging. After a difficult season-opening victory against Vancouver, Levi settled down against Seattle and Anaheim before delivering his strongest outing yet against Los Angeles. His latest performance included a career-high 39 saves in a 4-1 victory over the Kings on October 13. That’s the kind of game that gets a goaltender noticed, especially on a team with championship expectations.
Edmonton Needs More Than Just Offensive Firepower
The Oilers can overwhelm opponents offensively, but relying on McDavid and Draisaitl to outscore every mistake isn’t a sustainable strategy. Edmonton’s 9-7 opening victory against Vancouver was a perfect example of how quickly things can get uncomfortable when the puck keeps finding the back of the net. Levi’s improvement since that game is encouraging because it gives the Oilers another way to win. They don’t always need five or six goals when their goaltender is capable of protecting a narrow lead.
Levi Is Making the Goaltending Competition Interesting
Tristan Jarry remains part of Edmonton’s goaltending picture, and Frederik Andersen is also on the roster, although he opened the season unavailable because of injury. That makes Levi’s early success particularly important. Every strong performance gives the coaching staff another reason to trust him with meaningful starts. There’s no need to declare a permanent number-one goaltender in October, but Levi is making it difficult to keep him on the bench. For a young goalie looking to establish himself at the NHL level, that’s exactly the position he wants to be in.
The Biggest Test Is Still Ahead
Three strong performances don’t guarantee an entire season of consistent goaltending. Opponents will study Levi, identify tendencies, and look for ways to make his life difficult. The challenge now is maintaining his positioning, rebound control, and composure when the schedule gets tougher. Edmonton also needs to defend well in front of him. A goaltender can steal games, but expecting him to rescue the team every night isn’t a recipe for playoff success. Levi’s recent numbers are impressive, but consistency over the next several weeks will tell us much more about his future.
Could Devon Levi Become Edmonton’s Long-Term Answer?
That’s the question Oilers fans should be asking. Levi doesn’t need to become the best goaltender in hockey to make a massive difference in Edmonton. He needs to be dependable, deliver timely saves, and give his teammates the confidence to play their game. If he continues performing at this level, the Oilers could find themselves with a legitimate competition for the starting job. And for a team chasing the Stanley Cup, having multiple goaltenders capable of winning games is a problem worth having.
Levi has earned the attention he’s receiving, but the next chapter matters more than the last three games. Edmonton has the offensive talent to compete with anyone. If Levi can provide reliable goaltending behind that attack, the Oilers become an even more dangerous opponent.
Oilers fans, has Devon Levi already done enough to earn the starting job, or should Edmonton continue splitting starts with Tristan Jarry?
